ARTHURDALE HERITAGE, INC.

The First New Deal Homestead was created in 1933, by former President Franklin D. Roosevelt and former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, to give aid to workers and their families during the depression. During 1933-1937, 165 houses were built at Arthurdale by the Federal Government. Businesses (such as the Mountaineer Craftsman Association) were also set up there. The district is on the National Register for Historic Places and the New Deal Museum has been set up in the following Arthurdale Heritage Buildings: The Administration Building; The Forge; The Service Station, The Center Hall, and our newest addition, a fully restored original homestead, A Wagner Homestead E-15.
Located in the right wing of the Center Hall is the Craft Shop, featuring AHI souvenirs and crafts by local artisans.

GORDON CHURCH

Built 1882 - Land deeded to community by Abraham and Elizabeth Gordon. People rode horses to church and the "upping" stone is still in the church yard. The chandelier, organ and other interior furnishings were purchased through efforts of a young ladies Sunday School Class. They raised funds by sewing in nearby homes for 25 cents a day. Church services are no longer held there. The building is located approximately 1 1/2 miles from State Route 92 (near Arthurdale) on Flat Rock Road or approximately 5 1/2 miles from US Route 119 (South of Morgantown) on the Gladesville Road.
